Rounding out the last weekend of October. Weather above average for this time of year. Lake temps holding steady from 47-51°. Still some leaves on the trees with afternoon temps in mid to upper 40’s, pleasant out of the wind. Most anglers’ attention on Musky, Walleye and Crappies at this time with lakes nearly all turned over, patterns settling down.
Musky: Fair-Very Good – Mid-week off as some lakes still in midst of turn-over. By weekend the only wall was the cloudless, nearly windless day on Sunday (10/26). While most struggled that day, Guide Jake Smith struck gold with a hefty 49” with clients. Action improved Monday (10/27) as barometer dropped, wind picked back up and Muskies found their appetites. Mostly suckers on quick strikes, but a few fish caught on rubber baits such as Medussas, tubes and swimbaits, as well as, jerkbaits and gliders.
Walleye: Fair-Very Good – Deep water action in 25-30’ using Jigging Raps, Shiver Minnows and jigs/redtails. Better sized fish showing up in catches as reports from anglers showing more females represented. Use caution, slow retrieve when working depths of 30’ or more so healthy release possible for Walleyes you don’t plan to (or can’t) keep.
Crappie: Fair-Good – Catches improved following a settling down of water from turn-over. Schools of suspending Crappies found in 12-20’ usually 4-8’ off bottom. Slip-float with medium fatheads for best action.
While there have been some nice incidental catches of Bass and Pike while targeting Walleye and Musky – not enough interest to add on reports.
Looks like a slow, continued cool down from here. With temps not dropping drastically, both Musky and Walleye fishing should remain strong.
