Minocqua Area Fishing Report

Things are cooling off a bit here in the Northwoods, temperature wise – but not fishing!

As our lake surface temps have fallen into the 68 to 70° mark following some cool pre-auto like nights, reports are picking up.

Signs of a good September fishing for most species as reports have taken an uptick, just in time for the Labor Day holiday weekend!

Smallmouth bass. Good – very good.

Following an impressive morning of smallie fishing, with fish of 15 to 20 inches anywhere from 14 foot sand grass flats to 30 foot mud/ rock transitions on the same lake in the same morning! Can't keep these fish down! Wacky, Ned, drop shots. Fun just keeps on coming!

  Musky; good

Fish shallow, mostly 10 foot and less. Following a few reports, now getting reports from after dark anglers, catching BIG fish on top water! Daytime bites on high riding bucktails, such as boo tails, wizards, and Honsey tales!

  Northern Pike; good

Action improving on artificials as water temps drop. Spinnerbaits, chatter baits and # 4 spinners catching fish in 8 to 12 foot weeds.

  Crappie; good – fair

Fish wide peers or boat houses while pitching small plastics or minnows 2 to 3 foot below small floats. Also along deep Coontail edges of 14 to 18 feet using medium fatheads suspended 3 to 6 feet off the weed basis.

  Largemouth bass; good

Some bites slowed down as some weed beds showed signs of falling back. Wacky can't be beat. Some good top water action after winds of the weekend settled down.

 Walleye; good

Finding fish in mud 18 to 20 feet of water feeding on mayfly larva. Slip floats and a medium leach or 1/8 ounce jig with a half nightcrawler. Other bites on rocks of 18 to 28 feet on nightcrawlers, chubs or shiver minnows. Still some weed action also on slip floats in 10 to 14 foot cabbage edges, using large fat heads or shiners found from the mixed minnows.

  Yellow perch; good too fair

When weekend winds calm enough, nice perch over 16 to 19 foot mud flats on half crawlers on 1/8 ounce jigs or on crawler harnesses.

  Bluegill; fair

Winds Mid gills Fishing tough! You small leeches 4 feet under a float along outside weed edges of 10 to 16 feet. Worms and small crappie minnows are also working.

While three days of strong winds kept anglers off the water or at the least making fishing difficult. Good reports with many nice fish coming from the few who ventured out

Looks to be a good holiday weekend with morning lows in the mid 40s, but highs in the mid 70s! Lighter winds will make it an enjoyable time to fish!
